George S. Woodhull was born on July 25, 1829. He was an accomplished scholar and attended New York University, where he became a member of Phi Chapter. Woodhull graduated in 1848, making him the first Phi Chapter member and first Zete to graduate.
Woodhull served as the first and third Phi Alpha of Zeta Psi Fraternity, from 1849–1850 and again from 1851–1852. He was also responsible for bringing Zeta Psi to Rutgers University. He encouraged his cousin, Judson H. Hopkins, to form a chapter at Rutgers University, and it became Delta Chapter.
Woodhull spent most of his life as a Presbyterian pastor. After his time at New York University, he attended Union Theological Seminary from 1849–1850 and Princeton Theological Seminary from 1850–1851. During the Civil War, Woodhull served as a chaplain of the 4th Virginia Infantry from 1861–1864. Woodhull returned to New York University for his masters’ degree in 1851 and doctor of divinity in 1889.
George S. Woodhull is remembered as a founding brother dedicated to the growth of Zeta Psi. He died on September 9, 1912.
