Motley, Arthur Harrison

Arthur Harrison Motley, nicknamed Red, is remembered as an exemplary Zeta Psi. He was a member of Alpha Beta Chapter at the University of Minnesota and as an elder helped determine the site of the Alpha Beta Chapter house in 1942. Motley served as Phi Alpha during World War II, from 1943–1945.

Motley was an extremely successful businessman and leader in the magazine industry. From 1946–1976, he served as president of Parade, one of the most popular magazines at the time in America. Motley was regarded as a great salesman and an avid speaker, giving hundreds of speeches throughout his life. He was inducted into the Advertising Hall of Fame in 1985. His motto was, “Nothing Happens Until Somebody Sells Something.”

Motley was an early member of Alcoholics Anonymous and worked hard to maintain his sobriety and encourage others to become sober. Motley is also known for his philanthropy, donating to organizations such as the Desert Hospital Foundation, Palm Springs Boy’s Club, United Way, and the University of Minnesota.

Motley is a recipient of many awards and honors, including the Distinguished Service Award, the highest honor of Zeta Psi. He died in 1984.
